Development of Bio-Industry to Drive the Bio-Economy Policy Corruption Problems and Solutions

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to study state and problems of
bio-industry, and to propose a sustainable development of bio-industry in
Thailand. This research employed qualitative approach by analyzing primary
and secondary information, and interviewing stakeholders that involved in
developing bio-industry in Thailand. The results show that bio-industry has an
important role for sustainable development, by adding values to agriculural
products with bio-processes, to achieve environmental-friendly bio-products,
including bio-fuels, bio-chemicals and bio-plastics. Important characteristics
for developing bio-industries are; close promixity of bio-industrial plants
within the same area that close to biomass source, integrative planning
and operating to maximize biomass utilization. Bio-complex development
in Thailand is in Nakhonsawan Province shows that bio-complex is an
important mechanism to drive the Government’s bio-economy policy into
success, by utilising sugarcane as a key feedstock, sustaining environment
by using bio-products, continuously encouraging research and development
bio-products. All of which contributes to sustainable economic, social,
and environmental development. Bio-Complex will also be a showcase to
encourage and attract further investment in bio-industry. This research
also proposes policy recommendations that important and critical to drive
the development of bio-industry, both investment incentives and demandcreating
incentives, in order that the bio-economy can be sustained in
Thailand.
