The research on “Preparation of basic industries and basic infrastructures in Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) in response to Disruptive Technology” aims to identify disruptive technologies that would create significant impacts in terms of threats and opportunities to the basic industries and basic infrastructures of the EEC and then provide assessment of readiness of private, government and academic sectors to cope with such disruption, followed by suggestions and recommendations for each sector. The methodologies of this research are (a) desktop study (b) focus group interviews of private sector, government sector and academic sector (c) threats and opportunities determination (d) analysis and recommendations.
From the research, the basic industries that influence the success of EEC are Petroleum and Petrochemical while utilities, transportations and logistics are the key infrastructures. The disruptive technologies that significantly impact to these industries and infrastructures are Digitalization and Electric Vehicle or EV Car.
In response to disruptive technologies, the government should be more flexible in the process and act as enablers for policy and the fundamental infrastructure supports as well as building collaboration platform for private sector, government sector and academic sector. Private sector should harbor digitalization and automation to improve the efficiency and competitiveness. Academic sector must adapt its programs to ensure graduates are catered for and can satisfy the demand and new skills required by the private sector. To benefit from disruptive technologies, changing the Mindset of people and organization culture to be agile to rapid change is a key success factor. If all sectors can well collaborate among one another and together uplift the readiness in response to these disruptions, EEC development would have a great chance of being a success.
