Measures for Solving Thailand Coastal Erosion Problems.

Abstract

Coastal erosion is a major problem that affects many losses in various aspects. The Thai government has realized importance of this problem and has put this aspect into the 20 years National Strategy. This study has objectives for overviewing coastal erosion problems in Thailand. By selecting two study areas, the coastline of Bang Khun Thian, Bangkok and the coastline of Maung, Rayong, the erosion problems and their solutions in the past and present have been explored.

This research is conducted base on knowledges of coastal engineering, pros and cons of each coastal protection structures and thier consequence. Application of coastal protection measures of the mentioned areas have been studied. The research is conducted by using aerial photographs from Royal Thai Survey Department from 1953 to 2013. Drone technology is also applied to investigate coastal environment of both areas at present time.

According to the result of the study, the coastline of Rayong province has been effectively applied the coastal structures to prevent the erosion. Meanwhile, the ineffective measures were introduced to the stop the erosion of Bang Khun Thian coastline.
