Abstract

The objectives of this research were to study and collect the local wisdom of farmers on the organic durian production based on Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) in Ban Khlong Phai, Wang Chan district, Ra Yong province. The study tool was a semi-structured interview form. Data were collected by 1) observation and in-depth interviews from three PGS organic farmers, using purposive sampling method, and 2) small group discussion with twenty-two PGS organic farmers. The collected data were analyzed by content analysis.

The results of this research found that local wisdom knowledge of PGS organic durian farm is classified into 9 elements as follows: 1) knowledge of soil enrichment with mineral elements, 2) knowledge of rootstocks preparation from native durian (wild durian) for planting, 3) knowledge of propagation by grafting the durian scions on different rootstocks, 4) knowledge of making the mounds for planting, 5) knowledge of fertilizing and weed management, 6) knowledge of inducing flowering of durian, 7) knowledge of hand pollination of durian flowers by using a brush to increase fruit set, 8) knowledge of prevention and control of root rot diseases, and 9) knowledge of maturity determination by physical properties. From the local wisdom knowledge of PGS organic durian farming mentioned above, it will be used to expand the research work by developing an online PGS organic durian farming curriculum to promote open education in the future.
