Abstract

Sunthon Phu is the commoner’s poet
whose works have contributed to the Thai
literary heritage. He develops “klon talad”, the
commoner’s prosody into the highest standard
of aesthetic, melodious and rhythmic form of
prosody. He is the first professional writer who
composes the long narrative without the
Jataka’s framework. He also develops the Nirat
literary genre into the travelogue expressed his
philosophical worldview together with love
lyric.
Sunthon Phu’s Ramphanphilap’s manuscript
was founded almost 100 years after his death.
As the poet’s autobiography, it reveals the
poet’s life which may be quite different from
what Prince Damrong Rachanuphap wrote in
his “Sunthorn Phu’s works and life.” i.e. Sunthon
Phu’s monkhood, the downfall of his life, his
patronages and the most important information
about his monkhood at Thepthidaram’s Temple
of the beautiful princess, “Apsonsudathep”
King Rama III’s beloved daughter and his
imaginative dream which can be interpreted as
his secret wish-fulfilment and as his social
intrigue that enables him to violate class and
age prohibitions in Thai society.
