Usage Behavior of Park and Ride for Secondary Purpose: The Case Study of Inner Area of Bangkok

Abstract

The context of inner area of Bangkok is regarded as economic hubs, leading people to engage in various activities. One of the main problems encountered is insufficient parking spaces. Consequently, people have turned to using Park & Ride services. The primary purpose of using Park & Ride facilities is to park vehicles and continue the journey via public transportation. However, it has been observed that Park & Ride facilities in urban inner area of Bangkok are being used for secondary purpose, such as simply parking vehicles, and activities are focused around these parking areas or utilizing parking spaces in other forms without continuing the journey via public transportation. This issue has not been studied. Therefore, researchers aim to study this issue to understand the behavior of Park & Ride service users for secondary purpose. This will be done through survey and questionnaires. Then collect data during April 2022 – June 2022, and data will be analyzed to understand the behavior of Park & Ride service users for secondary purpose of inner area of Bangkok


The study findings reveal that Park & Ride service facilities are used for various secondary purposes, including shopping malls, offices, or markets. Additionally, activities are generally located within a walking distance of no more than 500 meters from the parking facilities, which is considered a walkable distance. Furthermore, regarding the frequency of use, the majority of users visit the area for parking 4-5 days per week, accounting for percentage 31.2, and the average parking duration is found to be less than 15 minutes, as it is not subject to parking fees, which accounts for percentage 16.1 of the cases. The predominant behavior observed at these Park & Ride locations at Huai Khwang and Samyan areas, The purpose of using these facilities is primarily for dropping off or picking up passengers, or engaging in nearby activities for short durations.
