Meaning of “Suranaree”

Suranaree Journal of Social Science (SJSS) takes its name from the esteemed Thao Suranaree, also known as Thao Suranari (1771–1852), a historical figure renowned for her bravery and leadership. As the wife of the deputy governor of Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat), she heroically defended the city against invaders in 1826, representing her legacy as a symbol of courage and resilience. Her contributions to the region's history are deeply revered, and numerous organizations including a university, college, schools, and even a sub-district, adopted her name in tribute.

Inspired by her legacy, Suranaree Journal of Social Science (SJSS) strives to honor her spirit by fostering intellectual courage and innovation within the academic community. By providing a platform for publications, SJSS proudly carries forward the heritage of Thao Suranaree, connecting local history with a mission to enrich the academic landscape across ASEAN countries.

History of the Journal

In 2006, the Institute of Social Technology at Suranaree University of Technology established Suranaree Journal of Social Science (SJSS) as a platform for faculty members and students to publish their research. The Research Department was responsible for this project, and the journal's first volume was published in June 2007.  In 2020, SJSS discontinued the printing of its journal and transitioned to publishing exclusively online, with the Electronic ISSN 2651-088X.

SJSS adheres to the rigorous quality standards set by the Commission on Higher Education (CHE), Thailand, ensuring that the publishing process meets national academic criteria. As a result, the journal received financial support from CHE for publishing in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences from 2007 to 2009.

Since January 1, 2015, SJSS has been indexed in the Thai-Journal Citation Index Centre (TCI) (Tier 1) and the ASEAN Citation Index (ACI), reflecting its growing recognition and impact. The journal maintains a high standard of academic integrity and quality to uphold its esteemed national and ASEAN-wide status.
