Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare lexical definitions between Thai and Lao dictionaries. The framework of the study included the information collected from every alphabet category from the Thai Dictionary of the Royal Institute, 2011 with a total of 11,654 words and the Lao Dictionary of the National Science Council, 2012 with a total of 12,155 words. The results of the research revealed 5 types of lexical definition in both Thai and Lao. In this study, only the 3rd type of definition, or a combination method between Thai and Lao, was presented as it was found that this type was the most used out of the 5 types. This 3rd. type was used in Thai for 32 forms. Whereas, in Lao, this 3rd. type was used in 24 forms. There were 7 similarities found between the lexical definition of Thai and Lao. However, there were 27 differences in lexical definition found in Thai, whereas, there were 17 differences found in Lao.
