The Integration of arts and cultural preservation and academic service for Music courses in the Mekong sub-region

Abstract

This research aims to explore and develop a comprehensive understanding of the integration of cultural preservation, academic services, and music education in the Mekong River Basin region. Employing a mixed-methods research approach that combines qualitative and quantitative methodologies, data will be collected from various sources, including documents, textbooks, research papers, observations, and interviews. The primary objectives are to enhance the pedagogical models in integrated education, academic services, and cultural preservation, and to investigate the satisfaction levels of service providers, academic recipients, and cultural enthusiasts.

              The research findings reveal that "Pinpeat" is a traditional musical ensemble comprising percussion instruments, wind instruments, and string instruments. It is a musical tradition within the cultural sphere of the Mekong River region. The study identifies cultural connections among musical traditions in various countries, such as "Wong Chong Cha" in Cambodia, "Wong Sai Wai" in Myanmar, "Pinpeat" in Laos, "Pi Phat" in Thailand, and "Pinpeat" in Cambodia. These traditions share commonalities in their roles and responsibilities within royal courts, ceremonial rituals, and Buddhist practices.  The research further explores the cultural linkages between these musical traditions and their ties to the academic setting of Nakhon Phanom University, situated in the cultural landscape of the Lanna Kingdom. This connection leads the researchers to integrate the study of music in the Mekong River region into practical learning experiences through the "Pinpeat" ensemble. This approach aims to contribute to the integration, preservation, and academic service of cultural arts within communities and society.The study employs the "Pinpeat" ensemble as a practical tool for cultural preservation and educational service, particularly through community-oriented schools associated with local activities. The evaluation of service provider satisfaction and quantitative data indicates a satisfaction level of 4.51 in the academic year 2024, 4.59 in the academic year 2025, and a service recipient satisfaction level of 4.82. This information serves as a guideline for developing comprehensive teaching methods and enhancing competencies in practical skills and organizational relationships among the university, community, temples, and schools. These efforts align with the mission of Nakhon Phanom University, aiming to fulfill the university's commitment to community development.
