Abstract

This development research aimed: 1) to develop the English Teaching Model in Local Contexts based on Language Acquisition Device (ETMLC-LAD) and 2) to study the results of the ETMLC-LAD model. The population was grade 7 students. The sample was selected 2 classes out of 4 classes of grade 7 students were selected using purposive sampling technique. The first class was an experimental group taught by using the ETMLC-LAD and the other was a control group taught by the Grammar-Translation Model. The research instruments were (1) experimental tool-the instructional plan based on ETMLC-LAD, and (2) data collecting tools-a learning achievement, an observation form, an interview form, and a satisfaction questionnaire form. The research findings indicated that the ETMLC-LAD consisted of 5 stages: the one-word stage, the two-word stage, the multiword stage, the sentence stage and communication, and the language achievement test stage. Each stage comprised of local contexts, teaching materials, teaching techniques and instructional activities. Every stage corresponded to the determined contents, as well as language skills started from listening, speaking, reading, and writing respectively. The student’s learning achievement after teaching with the model was significantly increased in all skills at .01 level. The students were satisfied with the ETMLC-LAD model in overall at the high level. The evaluation of the model showed that it was efficient in accordance with the set efficiency criterion of 77.77/71.07 which was higher than the criteria set.
