Upasakachanalungkara : Transliteration Translation and Analysis

Abstract

This research article focuses on presenting Upāsakajanālankāra scripture dealing with explanation of the right discipline and behaviors of Buddhist laities compared with great ornament and jewels. It was composed by Ven. Bhadanta Anandamahathera, a Sinhalese Bhikkhu. The registered number of Upāsakajanālankāra scripture containing 3 ties has been arranged its content into 9 sections containing of great value of literacy, knowledge, culture and behaviors of Buddhists which should be preserved and promoted for benefits of later generations. The analysis of the said scripture’s value in aspect of practical codes for the Buddhists in Thai society showed that Ven. Bhadanta Anandamahathera had given an explanation of the practical code for Buddhist laity in details consisting of 9 sections; 1) Saraṇa or Triple Gem reflection in mind as refuge, 2) Sīla or moral codes for righteous bodily, verbal actions, 3) Dhutanga or  13 austere practices allowed by the Buddha, 4) Sammā-ājiva or right livelihood consisting of avoiding 5 types of wrong business etc., 5) Puññakiriyāvatthu or bases of 10 meritorious actions such as charity etc., 6) Antarāyikadhamma or the dangers such as slander, blaming those Noble One etc., 7) Lokiyasampatti or the wished worldly wealth, 8) Lokuttarasampatti or the self-wished transcendent property, and 9) the merit accomplishment.
