Transliteration, Translation, and Analysis of Pāli Vocabulary in the Pāli-Thai Lexicon of the Tipitaka, Volume 1 (A-Adhiseti)

Abstract

This dissertation, titled "Transliteration, Translation, and Analysis of Pāli Vocabulary in the Pali-Thai Lexicon of the Tipitaka, Volume 1 (A-Adhiseti)," is a qualitative study utilizing documentary research. It has three main objectives: 1) to transliterate the Pāli vocabulary in the lexicon from Thai to Roman script, 2) to translate the Pāli vocabulary into English, and 3) to analyze selected Pāli terms from linguistic and semantic perspectives.

The research findings are as follows: 1) The systematic transliteration of Pāli vocabulary from Thai to Roman script, adhering to the standards of the Pali Text Society (PTS), was successfully completed, making the lexicon accessible to international academia. 2) A total of 4,088 headwords from the first 508 pages were translated into English, most of which were nouns (55.91%), thereby creating a valuable Pāli-English vocabulary resource for Tripitaka studies. 3) The analysis of 20 selected Pāli terms demonstrated the intricate relationship between linguistic structure (morphology) and the profound meanings connected to Buddhist doctrines (semantics), confirming that an understanding of Pāli linguistics is key to the accurate interpretation of the Buddha's words.

The new knowledge gained from this research includes a concrete illustration of the integrative relationship between "language" and "Dhamma," and the creation of a "knowledge bridge" between the Eastern Pāli scholarship tradition and the international academic world. This elevates Thai scholarship, enabling it to play a more significant role in the global academic arena.
