Astrology in the Tripitaka

Abstract
This academic article aims to study and analyze the concepts of astrology found in the Tripitaka. comparing them with Thai astrological practices that have been traditionally transmitted. This study surveys the Vinaya Pitaka. Sutta Pitaka. and Abhidhamma Pitaka to identify passages related to divination. fortune-telling. and various forms of astrology. The findings reveal that the Buddha made numerous statements regarding astrology. particularly in the Vinaya Pitaka and Digha Nikaya. which specify various forms of divination that monks should not practice. However. Buddhism does not deny the existence of natural phenomena. but rather emphasizes non-attachment and self-reliance. This article presents a comparative analysis between astrology mentioned in the Tripitaka and Thai astrology currently practiced. highlighting both the relationships and differences between these two belief systems.
