The Political Participation of the Elderly in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, Thailand

Abstract
The objectives of this research were to study the level of political participation and to compare the level political participation of the elderly in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province by demographic categorization. The research was mixed method research. The sample for quantitative research was 397 elderly who lived in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province. The key informants for qualitative research were 35 elderly who were the key persons in the communities. The research tools was a questionnaire with a reliability confidence factor of 0.836 for quantitative research, and a semi-structure interview for a qualitative research.
The result revealed that 1) the average level of overall political participation of the elderly in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province is ranked at the moderate level ( =2.65, S.D.=0.694), in which the political participation for political voting was the highest average scores, and followed by political interest, political behavior, political rallies, and participation in political activities with political parties and political groups respectively. This was consistent with the interview results which found that most of the elderly were interested in political news through radio, television and online media. Especially, if they were issues related elderly gain or loss benefit. 2) The comparison between the level of political participation of the elderly, and gender, marital status, education level, occupation, income, residence and location of residence were significantly different at 0.05.
