The Ecclesiastical Administration of Sangha Potentates in Mae Hong Son Province

Abstract

This article aimed to study the management of the Sangha affairs of the Sangha Potentates in Mae Hong Son Province and the factors supporting the success of the management. This is qualitative research using data from 73 monks and their residences through semi-interviews, focus group discussions, and observation.

The research found that the Sangha managed Sangha affairs based on Sangha governance regulations that had a formal structure with a clear line of command along with a horizontal structure based on Buddhist principles, faith, and respect among monks. The management of monastic affairs consisted of administrative management, religious education, welfare education, the spread of Buddhism, public utilities, public welfare networking, and the usage of new management tools. Moreover, the research results regarding the factors supporting the management of monastic affairs at the Sangha Potentates level found that the important factors that support the management of monastic affairs to achieve success efficiently and effectively include: factors in terms of knowledge, ability, experience, power and charisma, number of years of experience, monastic rank, the budget that was used for management with the participation of relevant sectors, and development factors.
