Abstract

This article aims to analyze the urban development strategies of Xishuangbanna in the dimensions of tourism and industry, with a focus on understanding the impacts and sustainability challenges regarding Tai Lue ethnic culture within the context of China’s economic expansion and cross-border connectivity. This study employs a synthetic qualitative research method, analyzing academic literature, policy reports, and relevant research, as well as empirical data obtained from field observations in Xishuangbanna to explain the dynamics of development at both urban and regional levels.

The findings reveal that cultural tourism and the development of bio-industries, such as Pu-erh tea and rubber, play a crucial role in driving the economy and the transformation of Jinghong City. However, such growth has created tensions between economic value creation and the preservation of Tai Lue cultural identity, particularly regarding the issues of cultural commodification and the limited participation of local communities. The article concludes that the sustainability of Xishuangbanna's urban development depends on the ability to integrate the economy, tourism, and cultural conservation in a balanced manner over the long term.
