Abstract

This research examines the creation of a dance, which is based on the writer’s experience in both Thai and Indonesian dance forms. In the category of Fine Arts, and in the form of Applied Art, this research integrates the knowledge in Thai dance with the knowledge in Indonesian dance, and is inspired by Thai literary works, entitled Dalang and Enau, derived from Indonesian stories. The result of which demonstrates a strong relationship between Thailand and Indonesia, in terms of literature, performing arts and music. Creative research methods were employed in the study, including creating new dance movements and score, and designing a new set of costumes. A novel dance form has been developed with regard to the principles of intercultural practices, culminating in the production of Intercultural Thai-Indonesian dance. The result of the research shows that in the study of dance in the university setting, apart from learning Thai dance forms, Indonesian dance forms can also be taught; and based on the experience of transferring the dance techniques from the teacher to the students, a concise form of intercultural dance can be practiced by the students. Moreover, the students are equipped with the techniques of Indonesian dance during the process of learning. This research, entitled Creating Intercultural Dance: “Enau” in the Javanese-Balinese form, aims to contribute to the development of Thai performing arts and to exemplify the process of knowledge transfer between contemporary performing art teachers or artists and their students, which in turn demonstrates the long-term development of Thai performing arts from the past to present.
