Design and Development of Sticky Rice Utensils Set

This paper reveals the invention process of Thai sticky-rice eating utensils and its contemporary serving container. Sticky-rice has been an authentic source of food for Thais and several countries within Suvarnabhumi region for over 7,000 years. Cultures and way of life related to sticky-rice were become part of the people’s life. “Jok”, “Jum”, “Pun” and “Kratip” are some of typical ways of eating characteristics which reflect uniqueness. The invention of the dining set follows the universal standard of design process: Identify; Explore; Define and Realize. Throughout the paper, design process is shown chronologically, start from literature research for related data gathering then analyzing and synthesizing the information in order to develop the design and final prototype for focus group testing. The outcome from the focus group reveals positive results: The design is suitable for Sticky rice’s characteristic; The design improve adaptability to contemporary context; and the design remains Thai characteristics and cultural values. The final design also capable of production within the frame work of Industrial Crafts.
