The creation of abortion myth in a TV Series, "Hormones"

Abstract

The analysis on how the myth about abortion was constructed through a TV series, “Hormones” is conducted by observing “Dao” and “Fern”, two female characters involving an abortion. The two characters represent the idea that a woman having an unwanted pregnancy is a result from a casual relationship, then abortion becomes an easy and irresponsible way out. Also, being a pregnant high schooler is morally wrong, so the rights of teen moms shall be violated., People are able to condemn them and preach them with their moral standard. Moreover, abortion process is featured as a scary, dangerous, unsafe action, even though it is conducted by doctors at a clinic or by the teen mom themselves. However, the TV series fails to show the fact that women having unintended pregnancy can have a safe abortion at many places that are approved by the international laws, which allow people a legal access. As women who have an unwanted pregnancy are presented as bad women, therefore, a legal action that allows women to end their pregnancy safely has never happened in Thailand. Teen moms who keep the baby often lose an educational opportunity. And if they dare try having illegal abortion service, they will critically risk their lives.
