Studying Plant Patterns in a School Botanical Garden for Three Dimensional Art Design and Lai Kam Ma Law Creation in the Pan Mai Lai Thong Collection

Abstract

This creative research was conducted to serve three objectives: 1) examine characters of plants in a school botanical garden for designing and creating three dimensional (3D) gilding patterns on multicolor lacquer (Lai Kammalor) in the Pan Mai Lai Tong collection; 2) design a 3D gilding pattern collection on Pan Mai Lai Tong multicolor lacquer; and 3) create a collection of 3D gilding patterns on Pan Mai Lai Tong multicolor lacquer. The examination was done with plants in the area of Piboonbumpen Demonstration School, Burapha University. An artistic technique with modern materials were used for creation. Results:

1. Pattern creation was inspired by three plants: golden shower (Cassia fistula), Bodhi, and lignum vitae. Different plant organs (root, trunk, branch, stalk, flower, fruit, and seed) were examined and all were suitable for creating patterns.

2. Three work pieces were created, inspired by characters of different plant organs, with creation based on visual art principles, including visual elements, composition, color theory, and the artistic convention of multicolor lacquer gilding (Lai Kammalor).

3. 3D gilding pattern creation relied on Lai Kammalor conventions, but modern materials and varied techniques were applied to the process. Outcomes were a collection of unique contemporary 3D gilding patterns on multicolor lacquer.
