Hug Sathit: from the Love Legend of Uangsae (Orchidaceae) to Lanna Performing Arts Creation

Abstract

The series "Hug Sathit" is an artistic performance inspired by the Lanna love story "Uangsae"(Orchidaceae). The new choreography has the objectives 1) to explore the love story of "Uangsae" and 2) to create the performance "Hug Sathit" series through a qualitative research process combined with 4C PE MODEL. This model is a development of learning management that aligns with the practice of creating the performance specifically utilized for this project.

During the study, the researcher discovered that the Legend of "Uangsae" consists of 3 types of Lanna literature which are: 1. The narrative poem. This poem style aims to speak in the beginning as an introduction, 2. The folk song "Kham Muang" is used for singing, 3. "Klonsuphap" is a form of Thai octameter for reading. All three different types of narrative in the love legend remains appropriate combination. Therefore, the researcher used the three types of narratives to choreograph a new performing art called "Hug Sathit." Hug Sathit" can be divided into two periods of expression: the "Hug" period demonstrates a young Lanna couple deeply in love with each other, and the "Sathit Hug" period portrays a young woman patiently awaiting the return of her beloved with unwavering faith in love. Even after the woman passes away, her spirit remains attached, transforming into a mist that envelops the mind with the presence of the orchid flower tree, which calls Uangsae in the Lanna Language. The performance incorporates six essential elements: performers, music, dance movements, costumes, props, and light and color scenes. These elements collaborate to create a comprehensive and engaging experience. After evaluating the creative works under the "Dancing Wisdom: creative arts for Society" project, the five committees concluded that the quality of the creative work was excellent. The performance project "Hug Sathit" reflects the effectiveness of the 4C PE Model, a learning management model for creative performing arts, as an alternative approach suitable for implementing learning management strategies that foster the development of creative thinking among performing arts learners at the higher education level.
