Mohini : a dance creation of the maya of Vishnu

Abstract

This research studies Mohini, described as the maya or illusion of Vishnu, in a dance creation to evaluate six elemental forms of dramatic art: 1) play; 2) actor; 3) movement; 4) sound and music; 5) costume; and 6) light. This creative research process uses three concepts: multiculturalism, postmodern dance simplicity, and dramatic art aesthetics. Data was collected from documents, observation, and interviews as well as other information media for analysis and summarization.  The goal was to present the story of Mohini in the Mahabharata and Ramayana epics, corresponding to the Ramayana story in Thailand. Mohiniyattam is a traditional Indian dance depicting the beauty and delicacy of the Lasya style, influenced by dance legends. This creative work may add understanding by examining the creative process to further develop the design of dance and other performing arts in future.
