A Designing of Tableware Ceramics Product Inspired from Pebble Stone

Abstract

This creative ceramics design research inspired by pebbles studied 1) pebble stone physical characteristics and properties; and 2) concepts and creative processes in clay and ceramics production methods for use in creating a pebble-inspired ceramics tableware series by primary and secondary sampling observation. Data was summarized and analyzed and design guidelines formulated for prototype products. Results were that river pebbles were round in shape with smooth surfaces suitable for tableware design for a 10-piece household ceramic utensil set comprising coffee mugs, saucers, flat plates, wide bowls, small cups, medium cups, sugar bowls with lids, sauce bowls, and coffee jugs. For Japandi style interiors, the design approach was based on combining warm, natural Scandinavian simplicity and Japanese handicraft simplicity. Works were created according to industrial ceramics processes. A hollow slip casting using stoneware clay mixed with stain color was decorated with inlays and clear glazes and fired in an electric kiln at 1,220 degrees Celsius (°C), under an oxidated atmosphere. Workpieces were food containable and usable for intended purposes, creating a consistently harmonious atmosphere naturally in diverse contexts. These concepts may be useful for creating other product design guidelines.
