The Making of Video Performance “Me-Memory”: An Exploration of Memory and Space

Abstract

The Video Performance “Me-Memory” is an undergraduate thesis for Performing Arts Degree. Its concept arises from questioning and exploring oneself through memory. The creative process aims to revisit my (creator’s) personal memories as well as my parents’, grandmother’s and grandfather’s memories of ‘me’ through stories they told. The conceptual framework includes Memory, Space, Performance, and Mindfulness/Meditation-based Movement. They are 5 steps in the creative process of: (1) exploring and analyzing narratives from family memories; (2) searching for presentation methods; (3) performing and filming; (4) video and sound editing and (5) Public Exhibitions. The results show that “Me-Memory” can present the process of exploring memory through creator’s bodily perceptions of space and inner feelings in conjunction with the stories. The performance is the product of this exploration. The footage of performance in the space, those stories from the memories through voices and the editing techniques are used in this video performance. The performance presents feelings and self-understanding based on exploration of memories.
