Abstract

This study aims to (1) examine the image of popular tourist destinations in Thailand suitable for digital nomads, (2) propose design guidelines for ceramic hotel décor that balance functionality and aesthetics, and (3) develop prototype ceramic products to support the digital nomad lifestyle. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative data from interviews with hotel operators, design experts, and digital nomads, with quantitative data from questionnaires distributed to a total of 60 participants. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools were applied to generate concept images and support prototype development.

The findings reveal three distinctive destination themes—Islands & Beaches, Urban City Life, and Northern Nature & Culture—each defined by specific colors, materials, and forms that reflect their unique local identities. Six key design principles emerged: simplicity in functionality, local cultural expression, contextual compatibility, use of natural materials and warm textures, meaningful experience design, and integration of technology for work support.

Five ceramic prototypes were developed and evaluated, with the Northern-themed design rated highest for effectively conveying local identity and suitability for hotel use. In contrast, the urban and beach-themed designs received suggestions for improving their visual identity representation. The results highlight that combining functionality, aesthetics, and local identity can enhance value and create distinctive experiences for hotel guests.

These findings can be applied to the commercial development of ceramic décor products for hotels, resorts, and niche accommodations seeking to attract travelers who value a balance between work and leisure, while expanding opportunities in the sustainable experiential tourism market.
