Development and Design of Leftover Fabric in Textile Factory for Lifestyle Fashion Products by Patchwork Technique from Pythagorean Theorem

Abstract

           This creative research aimed to: (1) explore the development and design approaches for utilizing fabric waste from the textile industry through patchwork techniques inspired by the Pythagorean Theorem; and (2) develop lifestyle fashion product prototypes using the same mathematical-based method. The study found that applying the concept of the Pythagorean Theorem allowed for the effective integration of fabric scraps of various sizes, resulting in balanced and aesthetically pleasing geometric patterns. This design approach enabled the creation of right-angled triangle motifs without generating additional waste from cutting, supporting the principles of mathematical precision, creativity, and optimal resource use. The research aligns with the concept of Zero Waste, which aims to minimize production waste, and promotes Upcycling - transforming discarded or unused materials into higher-value products without undergoing decomposition or recycling processes. The resulting fashion lifestyle products, such as oversized bags and jackets, were evaluated by three experts and received an average score of 4.3 out of 5, indicating a very good level of satisfaction.
