The Transitional Years: A Case Study of Georgia O’Keeffe’s Artworks in a Time of Vulnerability (1929 -1936)

Abstract

          Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986) is best known for her series of flower paintings and abstract art, however, her vulnerable years (1931–1933) have not been limited examined. This study aims to examine her works which produced between 1929 to 1936, encompassing both the period preceding and following a major crisis in her life. Rather than interpretating her works through psychoanalytic symbolism or psychiatric diagnosis, the research approaches them as a case study, combining biographical narrative inquiry with qualitative interpretation to connect the artist’s life story with art as its primary method.

           The researcher integrates both practical artistic experience with art theory, alongside psychological literatures, to analyze O’Keeffe’s works during this critical phase before, between and after her treatment for mental health issue. The study highlights how, despite, encountering psychological distress, O’Keeffe’s ability to attain posttraumatic growth (PTG), contemplation, transformation and developed psychological resilience, ultimately, how she returned to a sustained artistic trajectory that continue throughout her lifetime.

           Although O’Keeffe rose to prominence during the Modern Art era, her works may be perceived as outdated in the present context. On the other hand, the researcher found that this study underscores the value of her art as a form of life-memoir. In this article not only reflects the complexities of human experience, but also offers potential inspiration to contemporary artists who confronting mental health challenges.
