Abstract

The objectives of this research are: 1) To study the needs for developing emotional and social learning skills of high school students, and 2) To propose guidelines for developing emotional and social learning skills for high school students. This research uses a mixed-methods approach, comprising both quantitative and qualitative studies. The sample group consists of 286 students from grades 11 and 12. The research instruments include a questionnaire to assess the needs for developing emotional and social learning skills, a questionnaire on the guidelines for developing these skills, and a semi-structured interview. Quantitative data are analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and the modified Needs Index (PNImodified). Qualitative data are analyzed through content analysis.

The research findings revealed that: (1) high school students need to enhance their emotional and social learning skills, especially in the area of social awareness. This is consistent with the current average level of emotional and social learning skills among high school students, which is lower than the desired level. When considering the prioritization of development needs by component, the area with the highest need for development is social awareness (PNImodified= 0.15), followed by relationships (PNImodified= 0.11), (2) The proposed guidelines for developing emotional and social learning skills in high school students, to ensure their sustainability and alignment with students' needs in a high-quality and effective manner, are divided into four areas:  lessons, content, learning resources and technology, and activity organization formats.

  1. The summary of recommendations for the development of emotional and social learning skills of high school students is as follows: Such development should be integrated into guidance activities, focusing on content related to self-respect and respect for others, educational planning, and organize activities in the form of educational games.
