Legal requirements on air monitoring record and medical record retention of occupational asbestos exposure

Asbestos is naturally occurring made up of mineral fibres. It has been used expandly in various industries in Thailand. Apparently, Thailand is one of the top ten countries importing the most amount of Asbestos fibres for industrial use. Therefore, asbestos is the main determinant of mesothelioma for persons who have worked directly in asbestos industries and breathed closely to asbestos substances. This disease has a long stage of latency which can be difficult to diagnose from patients who have occupational asbestos exposure. However, the period of collecting information of asbestos levels on air monitoring records at work including a medical history and patient’s checkup must be long enough to verify the medical examination. Those statistics can be used for setting the future plan and policies of disease prevention and control.
The aim of the present study is to review the related regulations and laws about Legal requirements of time length on air monitoring record and medical record retention of occupational asbestos exposure in Thailand by comparing with abroad regulations. This may raise concern about this factor and health problem from asbestos in Thailand and needs related regulations, laws or policies improvement.
