Rojarek Kamhaengkit Evaluating Fourth-Year Students’ Expectations and Reality with Independent Study at Faculty of Liberal Arts, Princess of Naradhiwas University

Abstract
The objectives of this research were to (1) evaluate the alignment between students’ expectations and reality in their independent study, (2) compare the circumstances surrounding expectations with the realities encountered during individual studies, and (3) investigate the factors influencing the actual outcomes of independent study among fourth-year students at the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Princess of Naradhiwas University. The study sample comprised 62 fourth-year students enrolled in the final semester of the 2022-2023 academic year at the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Princess of Naradhiwas University. The research instrument employed in this study included a questionnaire with a high level of reliability, indicated by a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.97. The data in this study were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation (S.D.), as well as statistical tests including paired samples t-test and binary logistic regression.
The findings revealed that the students held high overall expectations for their independent studies (=4.05, S.D.=0.55), and the reality in their independent studies also reflected a high level (=3.99, S.D.=0.57). Secondly, there is no significant difference between students’ expectations and the reality of independent study. When categorized into components such as research objectives, sampling and population procedures, tool quality assessments, discussion of research findings, and bibliography writing, the questionnaire demonstrates a statistically significant difference at 0.05 level. Finally, no personal variables were found to significantly impact the students’ independent study experiences
