An analysis of Pattani Rong-Ngeng Folk Songs for Proposed Teaching Applications in Lower Secondary Music Classrooms

       The purposes of this qualitative study were to: 1) analyze the musical elements of Pattani Rong-Ngeng Folk Song (Rong-Geng),  and 2) propose applications of these songs for lower secondary music classrooms. The researcher conducted a literature review, utilizing primary sources such as media and recorded performances of Pattani Rong-Ngeng Folk Songs, as well as secondary sources including documents and related research on  Rong-Ngeng. Field data collection involved both participatory and non-participatory observations. The collected data were analyzed using content analysis, and conclusions were drawn using an inductive method according to the principles of music education.

The study revealed the following findings: 1) The majority of the collected traditional Pattani Rong-Ngeng Folk Songs from three Pattani Rong-Ngeng Folk Music bands feature the "Inang" and "Joget" rhythmic styles in their performances. Most songs were performed in the G Major scale, with the lengths ranging from 15 to 99 loops of rhythmic pattern. The musical forms identified were Ternary (ABA) and Binary (AB). 2) The analyzed songs can be integrated into various music education classroom activities, such as group and solo singing by using Movable Do or Fixed Do, singing with Neutral Syllables in melody or harmony, movement activities aligned with the songs, and percussion playing through imitation, improvisation, and creative performance. In addition, the stories within the songs can be applied to support other teaching objectives.
