Abstract

        This research aimed to study the level of participation in potential development and conservation of historical tourist attractions in Surin Province, and to develop a community participation plan for potential development and conservation of historical tourist attractions in Surin Province.  The target group comprised the people residing in the location areas of Sikhoraphum Castle, Ban Phluang Castle, and PhumPon Castle.  Research instruments were a questionnaire on community participation, and a checklist form.  Data was analyzed using the percentage, mean, standard deviation, and content analysis. The research findings showed that (1) the overall community participation in potential development and conservation of historical tourist attraction of Sikhoraphum Castle was at the low level (x̄ = 2.29; SD = 0.78); while that of Ban Phluang Castle was at the high level (x̄ = 3.82; SD = 0.50), and that of PhumPon Castle was at the moderate level (x̄ = 2.94; S.D. = 0.67); and (2) the community participation plan for potential development and conservation of historical tourist attractions in Surin Province was developed with the use of the Appreciation-Influence-Control (A-I-C) process of community participation plan development; the master plan comprised four main community participation plans for the three castles, with 14 projects for Sikhoraphum Castle, 11 projects for Ban Phluang Castle, and 11 projects for Phumpon Castle.
