Abstract

For over 800 years until present, “Phra Mahathat Nakhon Si Thammarat” (Nakhon Si Thammarat Pagoda) has been a valuable sacred place for not only the Buddhists in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province or the southerners of Thailand, but also for those in Southeast Asia. With the faithfulness, the citizen of Nakhon Si Thammarat endeavoured to propose this great pagoda to be listed as a World Heritage site according to the standard 1, 2, and 6 in the World Heritage criteria with the supports of Nakhon Si Thammarat Provincial Organization and Thailand’s Fine Art Department. This proposal was done on behalf of the Kingdom of Thailand, a member of UNESCO. At the World Heritage Committee’s 37th General Meeting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on 22nd June, 2013 A.D. (B.E.2556), Phra Mahathat Nakhon Si Thammarat was endorsed for inclusion on its tentative list for consideration as a World Heritage site. During 2013-2016 A.D. (B.E.2556-2559), nomination dossiers have to be perfectly compiled before the next consideration by the World Heritage Committee in the middle of 2016 A.D.
