The Local Wisdoms of Pottery Crafting by Utilizing Cambered Kilns the Mons in Kohket Island

Abstract

This research aimed to study: 1) local wisdom of the construction of the cambered kiln; and 2) characteristics of potteries crafted by utilization of this type of kiln. Data were collected through revision of secondary source documents and application of qualitative field research methods including participant observation, in-depth interviewed with experienced potters, and successors of the potter households. This study found that : 1) potteries were crafted by utilization of traditional kiln so called the cambered kiln. This type of kiln was constructed by 5 steps including : (1) masonry of firebricks,; (2) constituted from the foundation; (3) the base; (4) the lining; and (5) the back and the chimney; and 2) KohKret’s potteries comprised small and large wares such as earthen jars and washbasins. These potteries have characteristics of being unglazed earthen wares with light of range color and with certain degree of thermal insulation capability. Furthermore, they also have been used in daily life activities up to the present day.
