The effect of the rational emotive behavior therapy with individual counseling on optimism of people infected with HIV

Abstract

This research aimed to study the effect of the rational emotive behavior therapy with individual counseling on optimism of people infected with HIV.   The sample used in this research was 20 people infected with HIV admitted to Sanam Chai Khet hospital, Chachoengsao province in year 2019 who had optimism scores lower 25 percentile and qualified for the prescribed criteria. They were randomly assigned into two groups; each group has 10 persons and then purposively random treatment for experimental group and controlled group. The experimental group received individual counseling with the rational emotive behavior therapy 9 sessions of counseling for 50 - 60 minutes, Consecutive 5 weeks, twice a week for 1st week to 4th week and one a week for 5th week, while the controlled group received no treatment. The research materials were the optimism scale and the rational emotive behavior therapy with individual counseling. The study was divided into 3 phases: the pretest phase, the post-test phase and the follow-up phase. The data were analyzed by using repeated measures analysis of variance: one between-subjects variable and one within-subjects variable and tested of pair differences, using Newman-Keul's Method.

The results revealed that there was statistically significant interaction at .05 level between the method and the duration of the experiment. The average score of optimism of people infected with HIV in the experimental group was higher than the control group with statistically significant difference at .05 level when measured in the post-test and follow-up phases. The levels of optimism of people infected  with HIV, the mean score in the experimental group in the post-test and follow-up phases were higher than the pre-test phase statistically significant different at .05 level.
