Abstract

The objective of this paper was to study change in livelihoods strategies of small agricultural
households of the Northeast of Thailand, social, cultural, and natural environmental change.
Empirical evidence was derived from interviews of 28 small agricultural households of Nakhon Phanom
and Yasothorn provinces. This study found that natural capital remained critical for agriculture, and
direct use as sources of food. However, agricultural households are increasing dependent on
financial capital for investment on agriculture and other spending of the households. Human capital
is a key to improve livelihoods or mobilize away from agriculture, in particularly household members
obtaining higher education.
