Abstract

This study aimed to create a picture book titled "Khon: The Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" for hearing-impaired youths. It was conducted by qualitative research procedures such as gathering information from studies and surveying documentary papers, on-site surveying by content analysis, and after that, the researcher established the innovative medium of a picture book titled "Khon: The Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" for Hearing-Impaired Youths.

The study found that the creation of a picture book titled "Khon: The Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" for Hearing-Impaired Youths consisted of four elements, such as: 1) the definition of concept and model, to create a book that promotes the knowledge of "Khon" using printing media in the form of a picture book publication that uses technology in the form of video to combine with the use of QR code scanning; 2) the content definition and presentation, where the media put eight academic contents such as "Khon: The Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity", the origin of “Khon”, the types of “Khon”, the “Khon” in modern times, the characters, the design of costumes, weapons, and equipment. The contents were presented via texts, photos, symbols, and sign language video; 3) the design of the photo book’s elements, applied by the conservative concept of presentation of pictures and messages about Khon, presenting the outstanding identity of Khon in the traditional way together with the concept of visual aesthetic to attract the readers’ attention; and 4) the creation of sign language videos, to explain the content while reading using short videos to learn and increase the understanding of the reader.
