Innovation in Forecasting Through Decoding The Dhamma of Raider-Waite Tarot Cards Toward a Way of Life
Main Article Content
Abstract
In this dissertation, three objectives were purposely made: (1) to study the principles, concepts, and theories underlying Rider-Waite Tarot card forecasting; (2) to study the Buddhist principles embedded within the Rider-Waite Tarot cards as applied in the context of divination; and (3) to propose an innovative approach to forecasting through the interpretation of Dhamma embedded in the Rider-Waite Tarot cards as a guide to living. This research employed a qualitative methodology where data were collected through documentary analysis, a review of related literature, and in-depth interviews with 23 participants, including Buddhist scholars, professional Tarot readers, and clients of Tarot services. The data were analyzed by using a descriptive-analytical method.
The research findings showed that: (1) Rider-Waite Tarot card forecasting is a psychological belief system wherein the reading process assists recipients in overcoming suffering and anxiety. Effective practice requires the Tarot reader to have a thorough understanding of the symbols and contexts of all 78 Tarot cards, as well as to adhere to ethical standards in order to avoid causing harm to both the recipient and the reader. (2) Several Buddhist principles are found to be symbolically embedded within the Rider-Waite Tarot cards, including: the Four Iddhipãda (Path of Accomplishment) in the context of work; the Four Diṭṭhadhammikattha (Virtues Conducive to Benefits in the Present Life) in the context of finance; the Four Saṅgahavatthu (Bases of Social Solidarity) in the context of love; the Four Gharãvãsa-dhamma (Virtues for a good household life) in the context of family; moderation in eating (Bhojanemattanutã) in the context of physical health; the Four Brahmavihãra (Sublime states of mind) in the context of mental health; the Law of Karma; and the principles of Hiri or moral shame and Ottappa or moral dread. (3) An innovative model has emerged that incorporates Buddhist principles, ethics, and the Law of Karma into the forecasting process. This model fosters positive transformation through encouragement, mindfulness, and a rational, ethical approach to living.
The core contribution of this research is the development of the P.E.K.C. Model, which comprises: P (Psychology) — the belief in psychological healing through Tarot readings; E (Ethics) — adherence to moral principles to ensure no harm is done during the forecasting process; K (Kamma) — the understanding that one’s experiences are shaped by past actions in accordance with the Law of Karma; and C (Change and Happiness) — the resultant personal transformation characterized by increased mindfulness, encouragement, and the pursuit of a rational and virtuous life respectively.
