Ethical Values of Volunteerism: Inspiring and Guiding the Operations of Sukhsalanukroh Nakhon Pathom Foundation with Buddhist Principles

Abstract

This academic article aims to analyze the ethical values of volunteerism in rescue operations at the Sukhsalanukroh Nakhon Pathom Foundation, integrating Buddhist principles as both an explanatory framework and a guideline for practice. The study employs documentary research, synthesizing data from the Tipiṭaka, commentaries, Buddhist scholarly texts, and organizational documents. The findings reveal that: (1) the Four Sublime States (Brahmavihāra)—mettā, karuṇā, muditā, upekkhā—serve as the moral foundation for compassion and fairness in assistance; (2) the Four Bases of Accomplishment (Iddhipāda)—chanda, viriya, citta, vīmaṁsā—function as inner drivers for effectiveness, focus, and continuous self-improvement; and (3) the Ten Perfections (Pāramī), particularly generosity, patience, truthfulness, resolution, and loving-kindness, constitute the pillars of volunteers' character marked by self-sacrifice, integrity, and perseverance. The integration of these three doctrinal sets yields systemic outcomes: mindful and wise decision-making under emergencies, accountability and transparency, cross-sector networking, and sustainable community empowerment. The authors propose a practical "3C Framework" for rescue volunteerism—Compassion (Brahmavihāra), Capability (Iddhipāda), and Character (Pāramī)—as a combined ethical compass and operational guide that fosters inspiration, psychological resilience, mission sustainability, and public trust in rescue organizations.
