THAI CREATIVE DANCE: CHUI CHAI NAREE PEESAUSESAMUT JAMLANG

Abstract

The objectives of “Thai Creative Dance: Chui Chai Naree Peesausesamut Jamlang” are to study the importance of the role Peesausesamut in Phra Aphai Mani, the literary work of Phra Sunthonwohan (Sunthon Phu) and to create Thai dance in Chui Chai dance format. This research is a qualitative research.

The results show that Peesausesamut appears in 3 episodes; Episode 2: “Peesausesamut kidnaps Phra Aphai Mani,” Episode 9: “Phra Aphai Mani escapes Peesausesamut,” and Episode 14: “Phra Aphai Mani is shipwrecked.” Peesausesamut is the symbolic character which inspires creativity and challenge in Thai dance creation to represent her uniqueness. The creative dance “Chui Chai Naree Peesausesamut Jamlang” applied relevant theories into the creation, which can be divided into 7 steps: 1) Identity conceptualization of Peesausesamut, 2) Music composition, by composing new lyrics according to Chui Chai tradition, 3) Performer selection, by selecting the female performer, 4) Dance postures creation, by combining traditional dance postures with creative postures that represented the characteristic of Yak or giant, 5) Costume design, by using standard female attire with yellow two-tailed breast cloth with red trimming and Rad Klao Plew headpiece, 6) Presentation to experts and specialists, by doing focus group discussion to receive opinions and advice for the creation, and 7) Publication.
