LEADING ROLE OF THAI MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS PERFORMING IN THE ENSEMBLE

Abstract

This article aims to present conceptual and practical approaches of the functions, the performing principles, as well as the characteristics of the leading instruments during the performance. It is suggested that performers should be aware of the roles and functions of the instruments in the ensemble. The principle of Thai musical ensemble relies on each instrument assigned a different playing role which can be classified into 2 groups: leading instruments and supplementary instruments. Focusing on these functions, it is important to explore the performing principles and characteristics of leading instruments as well as understanding related factors during the performance. The study of the leading roles of Thai musical instruments performance can contribute to a theoretical approach that teachers, musician, and educational personnel in Thai classical music can apply when learning and teaching in practice.
