AN APPROACH TO ENHANCING THE EFFICIENCY OF MARITIME TRANSPORTATION PROCESSES: A CASE STUDY OF BULK CARRIER OPERATIONS AT HIGHLAND MARITIME CO., LTD.

Abstract
This study examined the company’s bulk cargo transportation process, analyzed problems and obstacles during loading and discharging operations, and proposed methods to enhance efficiency while minimizing waste. The sample comprised 23 crew members from the vessel M.V. Lianson Dynamic. Research methods included observation, data recording, and interviews. Data analysis employed a Flow Process Chart and Fishbone Diagram to identify weaknesses and sources of waste, focusing on four key factors: personnel, equipment, process, and planning. The ECRS principle and PDCA cycle guided the development of improvement strategies. The analysis revealed that, prior to improvement, the loading process involved 31 activities requiring 138 hours, while the discharging process involved 21 activities requiring 120 hours. Following the application of ECRS and PDCA through eliminating unnecessary steps, consolidating meetings, reorganizing workflows, and adopting digital systems the loading process time decreased by 68 hours (from 138 to 70), and the discharging process time decreased from 120 to 48. Overall, these improvements reduced total operation time by 140 hours and lowered voyage costs by 6,344,667 Baht per trip, significantly enhancing operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
