COST REDUCTION IN THE PROCESS OF RECEIVING LOGS AT THE PORT OF LOADING : A CASE STUDY OF PRECIOUS SHIPPING PUBLIC COMPANY LIMITED

Abstract
This research aims 1) to examine the process of receiving log cargo at the port of origin, and 2) to propose cost-reduction guidelines for improving this process at Precious Shipping Public Company Limited. A qualitative research design was employed, using a sample of all 23 employees involved in the log-receiving operations on board the vessel M.V. ANANYA NAREE. Data were collected through participant observation and interviews with relevant personnel. Process flowcharts were used to analyze the workflow, a fishbone diagram was applied to identify operational problems, and the Eliminate, Combine, Rearrange, Simplify, (ECRS) technique was utilized to improve the process. The findings showed that 1) the pre-loading process consisted of 22 activities requiring 286 hours, whereas the improved process consisted of 19 activities requiring 261 hours and 30 minutes. 2) By combining certain steps and rearranging the sequence of activities, the waiting time was decreased. The overall operational duration was reduced from 12 days to 11 days, and total cost decreased from THB 5,148,000 to THB 4,719,000 a reduction of THB 429,000, or 8.33 percent.
