Factors Affecting Transformational Leadership of Student Teachers in Physical Education and Health Education Programs at Kasetsart University

Abstract

This study is a descriptive research aiming to study the level of transformational leadership and factors affecting the transformational leadership of student teachers, majoring in Physical Education and Health Education. The sample comprised 210 student teachers of the aforementioned major at Kasetsart University, obtained by stratified random sampling. The data were collected by using a scale questionnaire on transformational leadership of student teachers, situational factors, psychological traits factors, and psychological states factors with the reliability of .951, .912, .936 and .944, respectively. The statistics employed for data analysis were the frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation , Pearson’s correlation coefficient, Cramer's V, Tolerance value, VIF value and stepwise multiple regression analysis – specifying the statistical significance value at the .05 level.

The results revealed that: 1)  the transformational leadership of the student teachers both in overall and individual aspects were at the high level; 2) overall , situational factors including participation in activities and social support were at the high level; 3) overall , psychological traits factors including emotional intelligence and self-efficacy were at the high level; 4) overall, psychological states factors including decision making and achievement motive were at the high level; 5) factors affecting the transformational leadership were emotional intelligence, participation in activities,  decision making, self-efficacy, and social support. These factors could predict transformational leadership at 61.30 percent, and the multiple correlation coefficient value was .789.
