Abstract

Secondhand smoke is one of the most silent dangers to the health of both smokers and non-smokers nowadays. This article aimed to present the health impact and control measures of secondhand smoke, including information about; 1) the concept of secondhand smoke, 2) the health impact of secondhand smoke, and 3) control measure of secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke is defined as substances generated by the smoke from the burning tip of cigarettes, which did not get into the body of the smoker. It is defined as substance generated by the smoker’s inhaled and exhaled. Secondhand smoke consists of many chemical substances such as ammonia, benzene, nicotine, carbon monoxide, and carcinogens for humans. People can be exposed to secondhand smoke from the smoke that is contaminated on surfaces of various objects in the environment and in the air. Long-term exposure to secondhand smoke would cause health impact consequences. Information on secondhand smoke should be provided for the public, and active control measures should be implemented. This will create the understanding and awareness about the health impact of secondhand smoke to increase people’s health literacy. That may lead to a reduction and cessation of smoking.  As a result, this would have a positive effect on the health of both smokers and non-smokers.
