Abstract

The objectives of this study are: 1) to study the health literacy level and roles in chronic disease prevention, among village health volunteers (VHVs), Ban Ton Prong Sub-district Health Promoting Hospital, Na Chum Het sub-district, Yan Ta Khao district, Trang Province; 2) to study the relationship between health literacy and roles in preventing chronic diseases of VHVs, in the same sub-district.  The sample group of this survey research consisted of 59 village health volunteers, using the purposive selection method, according to the specified qualifications. The research tool was a questionnaire with a consistency index of all questions between 0.66 - 1.00, and a questionnaire's confidence of 0.93 and 0.92, respectively. Statistics used in data analysis were frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation.  Pearson correlation was conducted for hypothesis testing for correlation.

            The results of the study revealed that health literacy had a relationship and a role in chronic disease prevention of VHVs (r = 0.397, p-value = <0.001). There was a correlation between access to health information and health service delivery (r = 0.358, p-value = <0.001); The following factors had correlation with roles in chronic disease prevention: health communication skills (r = 0.323, p-value = 0.002); media literacy (r = 0.314, p-value = 0.002); decision making skills (r = 0.328, p-value = <0.001); self-management skills (r = 0.394, p-value = <0.001); and knowledge and understanding or cognitive aspect (r = 0.390, p-value = <0.001), with statistically significant.

Suggestions are the following: policy planning and guidelines/activities should be prepared for continuously development for VHVs’ health literacy; and a qualitative research study should be conducted on VHVs’ health literacy development.
