Abstract

This descriptive cross-sectional research aimed to assess and identify factors related to oral healthcare behaviors of type 2 diabetic patients. The sample includes 168 type 2 diabetic patients receiving treatment at the Public Health Service Center 50 in Bueng Kum of Bangkok, selected through simple random sampling. Data was collected through interviews and was analyzed using frequency, percentages, means, standard deviations, Odds ratios (OR), and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI.).

The result showed that majority of patients had a low level of knowledge and behaviors, regarding oral healthcare (46.4% and 47.6%), a moderate level of awareness and service for oral health (46.4% and 73.0%), and a high level of social support (58.3%). Factors significantly associated with oral healthcare behaviors included income sufficiency (OR=2.88, 95% CI=1.01-8.15), knowledge of oral healthcare (OR=6.51, 95% CI=2.53-16.74), awareness of oral healthcare (OR=2.45, 95% CI=1.03-5.86), receiving oral healthcare information (OR=10.50, 95% CI=2.32-47.39), having oral cleaning supplies (OR=14.07, 95% CI=3.18-62.21), health insurance coverage (OR=2.86, 95% CI=1.09-7.46), and social support (OR=2.75, 95% CI=1.03-7.34). The policy recommendation from this research is to establish a continuous proactive oral healthcare service system, which includes access to cleaning supplies, training for knowledge enhancement, and monitoring of oral healthcare behaviors for diabetic patients.
