The Study of Toponyms of Sub-districts in Mueang District, Surat Thani Province Integrated with Thai Learning Management; Eighth-Grade Reading Comprehension, The Fifth Municipal School

Abstract

The purposes of this study were: 1) to collect toponyms of sub-districts in Mueang Surat Thani District, Surat Thani Province, and 2) to Integrate toponyms with Thai learning management of the eighth-grade reading comprehension. The samples selected from purposive sampling method were 11 community leaders or representatives (1 from each sub-district) and 50 eighth-grade students at the Fifth Municipal School studying in the second semester of the academic year 2021. The instruments used were a toponyms record form, a learning plan, pre-test and post-test, and an exercise with the article. The data were collected by interviewing and testing. The statistics were analyzed for 1) percentage (%), 2) mean (¯x), 3) standard deviation (S.D.), with testing t-test dependent samples. The results of the study revealed that: 1) the toponyms of each sub-districts had a different way of naming by locality; the most popular is the topography and plants for 3 sub-districts, followed by the topography and animals for 2 sub-districts; occupation, plants, topography, topography and historical events, important places and plants, legends or oral stories for each 1 sub-district, respectively, 2) students’ reading comprehension ability from integrating toponyms of sub-districts with Thai learning management; eighth-grade reading comprehension was higher than pre-result with statistically significant at .05 level.
