The Iconography and Historical Dating of Carved Wooden Mihrab at Tonson Mosque

Abstract

This article aims; 1) to study the meaning of the carved wooden mihrabin Tonson mosque by iconographic analysis, and 2) to date this mirhab through its form of art. The study reveals that the carved wooden mihrab reflects the concept of Islamic cosmology which positioned the oneness and the power of Allah, and the prophethood of Muhammad at the center. Moreover, it comprises many symbols and meanings of 5 Pillars of Islam and 6 Articles of Faith. According to the similar form of art with the Buddha’s footprints in the reign of King Rama III, this carved wooden mirhab is the art of early Rattanakosin Period. It might be invented at the time of the mosque reconstruction between the reigns of King Rama II to King Rama III.
