Unrecorded History Tin Mine and Chinese Community on Malay Peninsula in the 19th Century

Abstract
Social and economic history in an outlying area such as Thailand`s deep south has long been neglected despite its abundance of natural resources like tin and its economic vitality. This paper aims to fill this gap by outlining the history of tin-mining area in Rahman, now integrated as Yala province, in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. It focuses on the interaction between people involved in the tin business; Chinese mining labor, kongsi, tax collector, local Malay rulers, the central government in Bangkok, and British entrepreneurs who engaged in the business in the latter half of the nineteenth century. This paper demonstrates the characteristic of the business in this area that differs from those in Phuket or Ranong, while pointing out the fluid movement of people and commodities that goes beyond the concept of nation-state boundary.
